From an Idea to a Lifesaving Innovation: The Story of Implex
It all began in 2021 with a question no one in Ukraine had seriously asked before:
What if animals, too, could have implants made just for them?
Two passionate engineers, Leonid Smolinsky and Maksym Yefimenko, driven by their work at 3d metal company, teamed up with renowned veterinary surgeon. Together, they dared to combine the power of 3D-printing with the needs of veterinary medicine - a field where off-the-shelf implants often failed to help animals with complex injuries.
There was no roadmap. No instructions. Just CT scans, titanium powder, and an unwavering belief that even the most hopeless cases deserved a second chance.

The First Struggles
Despite the professional experience and years of studies, early days were filled with trials, hours of prototyping, nights debating bone structures. Doubts crept in - would the implant hold? Would the animal’s body accept it? One by one, the answers came in the form of wagging tails and healing paws. The breakthrough came with a tiny Yorkshire Terrier suffering from spinal instability. A miniature implant was created, perfectly tailored to its fragile bone. Post-surgery, the dog walked again - pain-free, full of life. That success sparked something bigger.

Growing the Mission
As word spread, more vets joined the cause. Most respected country’s orthopedic surgeons eventually brought their experience and trust. A once experimental idea became a national movement. By 2022, the team wasn’t just repairing bones - they were redefining what was surgically possible. Implants weren’t “products” anymore. They were miracles, designed individually for each patient - each a custom solution crafted with care.

A Global Movement
Then came Tor - a 56-kilogram dog who had lost his leg. Working with a team of bioengineers and surgeons, Implex developed and implanted Ukraine’s first biointegrated titanium limb. Within months, Tor was running again. It wasn’t just a clinical success - it was a global first: never before had a dog of this size received a permanent, functional limb implant.
That moment changed everything.

Becoming Implex
As cases multiplied and demand grew, it was time to evolve. In 2024, the company officially became Implex - a name that reflected its core: Implants. Innovation. Individuality. A dedicated structure, a shared mission, and a bold vision: to let no animal suffer due to lack of the right implant.
Today, Implex operates as a full-fledged leader in veterinary bioengineering. Over 200 tailor-made implants. More than 150 complex clinical cases solved. Seminars. Masterclasses. A growing network of veterinary professionals inspired by possibility.

What’s Next
From a backroom idea to a beacon of hope for animals across Ukraine and beyond, Implex proves one thing: when engineers and vets unite with compassion and courage, the impossible becomes magic.
And the story’s just getting started.
